Google is no longer enough: getting cited by ChatGPT

Your customers no longer just search: they ask an AI, Google's or ChatGPT, which answers by citing a handful of pages. Here is what we measure for our clients, what makes a page get cited, and what no one can promise you.

Key points

  1. 1.AI answers cite pages, and that can be measured. In four weeks, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode showed Puco Fuego's pages 483 times, and Arena Capital's 68 times.
  2. 2.The pages that get cited answer a precise question. At Arena Capital, seven of the ten most shown pages are guides; at Puco Fuego, a cooking article comes right after the home page.
  3. 3.No one can promise a place in an AI answer. What can be promised: the work done, and honest measurement.

Google no longer answers with links alone

Ask Google a question: sometimes it answers itself, at the top of the page (AI Overviews) or in its AI Mode, before the links. ChatGPT does the same, and your customers ask it their questions too. These answers cite a handful of pages. Being one of them means being seen at the very moment the question comes up.

Large brands have their agency track their presence in these answers, page by page. A small business can now have the same tracking, to the same standard. Here is what we see with our clients.

What we measure for our clients

Google publishes, in its Search Console, a generative AI performance report. It counts the times a page appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode: impressions, not reads. Over four weeks, from mid-September to mid-October:

SiteImpressions in Google's AI answers, 28 daysThe previous 28 days
Puco Fuego, a barbecue maker in Valencia483346
Arena Capital, a property dealer in Valencia6831
Prometal, a metalwork firm in France whose website we built6237
wedooall.com, our own site1427

Source: Google Search Console, generative AI performance report (AI Overviews and AI Mode), 28 days from 18 September to 15 October 2026 and the previous 28 days, read on 18 October 2026.

These four sites differ in size, audience and language: their figures do not compare with one another, and they do not add up. Each one only says that Google's AI reads pages from that site, and shows them.

For ChatGPT, we count what we can see on our side: the visits it sends. Over four weeks, from mid-September to early October, 85 visits came from ChatGPT to Puco Fuego and 16 to Arena Capital. That is a floor: visitors who refuse cookies are not counted. And it moves: the month before, Puco Fuego had received 125. No one controls these figures.

What gets a page cited

Google's AI does not cite the pages that sell first. It cites the ones that answer a precise question.

  • At Arena Capital, seven of the ten most shown pages are guides for sellers: the municipal capital gains tax on a sale, selling an inherited house, selling an inherited flat between siblings.
  • At Puco Fuego, right after the home page come an article on asado a la cruz, the Argentine cross-fire roast (70 impressions), a detailed product page, then an article on building a masonry barbecue (18).
  • At Prometal, after the home page, it is the brasucade pan (for Languedoc-style grilled mussels), for sale and for rent.
  • On our own site, after the home page, it is the journal pages.

What they have in common: a question people ask, and a page that answers it. What these figures do not say is why Google picks one page over another: this is an observation, not a recipe.

Google, in fact, offers no separate recipe. Its guide to generative AI search puts it in one sentence: "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO". Its AI features rest on the same ranking systems as its usual results. It even advises ignoring the tricks sold under the names AEO or GEO: chopping text into chunks, creating files meant for AI, chasing mentions of your brand.

What we do, in practice

  • Pages that answer your customers' questions: guides, articles, complete product pages. At Arena Capital, the site has published twelve guides for sellers since June.
  • A site that search engines and assistants can read: we check that nothing blocks their robots, and that the text can be read without running the page.
  • Measurement, on a fixed schedule: every month, impressions in Google's AI answers; every week, the visits that come from assistants.

What I never promise

Not a position, not a presence in ChatGPT or in Google's answers, not a number of visits. Google itself warns that "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (its page on the subject), and no one decides what an assistant shows. What I do promise: the work done, and honest measurement.

Three questions to ask yourself

  1. Do my pages answer the questions my customers actually ask?
  2. Can search engines and assistants read my site?
  3. Do I measure what AI shows about me, or do I guess?
