Operations & compliance

Verifactu and e-invoicing are coming. What really changes for a small business.

Your invoicing software will have to record every invoice and chain it to the previous one, and business-to-business e-invoicing will follow. Many companies will pay a platform for that. Others will use the moment to fix everything else at the same time.

Key points

  1. 1Verifactu is mandatory: your invoicing software must comply before 1 January 2027 if your company pays corporate income tax, and before 1 July 2027 otherwise (AEAT). The Spanish Treasury has announced a postponement to October 2028, not yet published in the official gazette.
  2. 2Business-to-business e-invoicing has a date: October 2027 if your turnover exceeded 8 million euros the previous year, October 2028 otherwise (Royal Decree 238/2026).
  3. 3Odoo announces free access to FACe and VeriFactu, where other solutions charge for the integration (Odoo's page).

There are two ways to live with this obligation. The first is to pick a platform, pay for it every year, and go on juggling an invoicing program, a stock spreadsheet and a client file that exists in three versions.

The second is to decide that, since something has to change anyway, that change may as well fix the rest too.

What the law demands, and of whom

Verifactu regulates invoicing software: every invoice creates a record chained to the previous one, which cannot be altered afterwards. There are two valid ways to comply: send those records to the AEAT as you go, the VERI*FACTU mode, or keep them in your own system, the NO VERI*FACTU mode (AEAT, general questions). For small operators with no invoicing software, the AEAT will provide a form on its website.

The dates depend on the tax your company pays: before 1 January 2027 if it pays corporate income tax, before 1 July 2027 otherwise, self-employed professionals included. Until then, it is a test period (AEAT note). On 5 October 2026, the Spanish Treasury announced it will postpone these obligations to October 2028 (Treasury note). Until that is published in the official gazette, the 2027 dates still apply.

The second obligation is e-invoicing between businesses and professionals. Its calendar started on 6 October 2026, when the ministerial order came into force (Order HAC/1028/2026): twelve months later, in October 2027, for companies whose turnover exceeded 8 million euros the previous year, and twenty-four months later, in October 2028, for all others (Royal Decree 238/2026). The AEAT's public solution will be free. We check this during the audit, before setting the project schedule: it is one of the first things we look at, because it decides when you need to be ready.

The real cost, and the one nobody mentions

Other solutions charge for the integration or for compliance, as Odoo itself writes (Odoo's page). It is what surprises our clients most when we explain it: paying, every year, to meet a legal obligation.

Odoo announces free access to FACe and VeriFactu (Odoo's page). Where other solutions charge for the integration, Odoo does not charge for that service. Moving to Odoo settles the obligation and the rest at the same time, for the price of a single setup.

An owner's month, before and after

A property holding company in Valencia rents out nine properties, five commercial units and four homes. Before, invoicing, contracts and bank reconciliation took two days a month. We installed Odoo and built on top of it the AIOS that runs it.

2 days a month spent on invoicing, contracts and bank reconciliation.

01 · BEFORE

Two days swallowed, every month

Issuing invoices, checking which leases have expired, reconciling transfers. Work that produces nothing, has to be redone every month, and happens whenever the owner has time, which often means late.

02 · ON THE 1ST

Invoicing goes out on its own

Every tenant receives their invoice on the 1st, with the tax treatment calculated from the property and the tenant. Nobody types an invoice. The calendar no longer depends on anyone's availability.

03 · AFTER

Only the decisions are left

The owner now only handles move-ins and move-outs: a new lease, a lease ending, a call on a deposit. The rest runs.

Spain and France: two regimes, two calendars

It is the mistake we see most often in companies working on both sides of the border: applying the Spanish calendar to a French company, or the other way round. The two regimes share neither their deadlines nor their mechanism.

Official texts checked on 19 October 2026: in Spain, the AEAT, the Treasury note of 5 October 2026, Royal Decree 238/2026 and Order HAC/1028/2026; in France, economie.gouv.fr and the list of approved platforms on impots.gouv.fr. Odoo's commitments are the publisher's own.

We work with companies in both countries, and we systematically check which regime applies during the audit, before setting any schedule. This is a statement about a legal obligation: it does not get simplified.

Where to start, concretely

If you invoice five clients a month and your stock fits on a shelf, an ERP is out of proportion: a good invoicing program that complies with Verifactu will do, and will cost you less.

If on the other hand you retype the same information three times a day, if nobody can state the real cash position, and if the accountant asks for the same documents every quarter, then the legal obligation is above all a good opportunity:

  • Check which dates apply to you: the tax your company pays, for Verifactu, and its turnover, for e-invoicing. Not a generic date.
  • Add up, over a year, what you pay today: invoicing program, quoting tool, stock spreadsheet.
  • Decide whether you want one more platform, or a single tool that settles the obligation and the rest. Our Odoo page details what a setup covers.
